🐠 Breeding

Koi breed most successfully in outdoor ponds, especially in the spring and summer months when the water temperature rises to around 20°C. They are egg-layers and will spawn in the early morning when conditions are right. Male koi will chase females, nudging them to release thousands of eggs, which stick to pond plants or specially placed spawning brushes.

While breeding koi in ponds is common, it can also be done in large aquariums, though this is more challenging due to the space koi need. Once eggs are laid, it’s important to separate them from adult koi to prevent them from being eaten. The eggs typically hatch within 3-5 days, depending on water temperature, and the fry will require special care, including high-protein foods designed for young fish.

Ponds provide a more natural setting for koi to breed and grow. The larger volume of water helps ensure that the fry have enough space to thrive and avoids overcrowding. If breeding indoors, meticulous water management and enough space for adult koi and their fry are essential.
