❤️ Care

The Royal Angelfish is one of the most visually striking saltwater species available to marine aquarists. With its bold bands of electric blue, orange, and white, this fish brings true regal flair to large, mature reef systems. However, its beauty comes with a reputation for being delicate—especially in smaller or unstable tanks.

Royal Angelfish prefer well-established marine environments with lots of live rock and shaded crevices to hide in. They’re naturally shy and will retreat into rockwork if startled, so tank mates and aquascaping should cater to their need for security. They do best in stable, high-quality water with ample space to swim and graze.

Diet can be a challenge. In the wild, Royal Angelfish graze on sponges, tunicates, and other encrusting invertebrates. In captivity, getting them to accept prepared foods can take patience. They should be offered a varied diet including sponge-based frozen foods, high-quality angelfish preparations, and some fresh greens like nori. Some individuals may also nibble at coral polyps, so their reef compatibility is best considered case-by-case.

When it comes to temperament, they are peaceful toward most non-angelfish tank mates but can be territorial with other angelfish—especially in smaller aquariums. A single individual is best unless kept in a very large tank with multiple hiding zones.
