The Yellow-flanked fairy wrasse, also known as the Ryukyuensis wrasse, is a very vibrant and colorful species of fish that originates from Japan. This species is classified under the conservation status "Least Concern," and while it is popular within the aquarium trade, it is considered a rare find.

Feeding

The Yellow-flanked fairy wrasse has a carnivorous diet in its natural habitat, largely consisting of small invertebrates and zooplankton. In captivity, it is vital to provide a varied diet that mimics its natural feeding habits to maintain its health and coloration. Suitable food options include high-quality marine flake food, frozen or live mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and other small meaty foods. Regular feeding, ideally two to three times a day in small amounts, will ensure the wrasse remains active and healthy.

Tank Setup

The aquarium setup for the Yellow-flanked fairy wrasse should reflect its natural environment to promote well-being. A minimum tank size of 75 liters is advisable, although larger tanks are beneficial especially when keeping more than one. These wrasses thrive in water temperatures between 22°C and 28°C, and a pH level between 8.1 and 8.4. They also require highly oxygenated water with a moderate to strong flow. A mixture of live rock and sand should be used to replicate the coral reef areas the species is accustomed to. These provide nooks for hiding as well as surfaces for algae, which the wrasse may graze on occasionally. Given their territorial nature, ample space is necessary to prevent aggressive behavior, especially if housing multiple males.

Community and Compatibility
