🐠 Breeding

Breeding Process

Black neon tetras can be bred in captivity, though it requires careful preparation and attention to their environmental needs. To simulate their natural breeding conditions, set up a separate breeding tank with soft, acidic water. Maintain the pH between 5.5 and 7.5 and the temperature between 22°C and 28°C. Use fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop as a substrate for egg-laying, as tetras lay their eggs in such areas. Select healthy and mature black neon tetras, ideally in a ratio of one female to two males, for breeding. Condition the pair with a diet rich in protein, such as live or frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp, to enhance their breeding readiness. Once the female appears full of eggs, place the breeding pair in the breeding tank.

Spawning

Spawning typically occurs in the early morning. During the spawning process, the male will chase the female around the tank, and she will release eggs that the male fertilizes. Scatter-type spawners like black neon tetras may deposit up to 100 eggs.

Caring for the Eggs

Once spawning is complete, promptly remove the adult fish from the breeding tank to prevent them from eating the eggs. The eggs will hatch in about 24 to 36 hours. Ensure that the tank remains in a dimly lit environment, as excessive light can harm the fragile eggs and fry.

Care of the Fry

After hatching, the fry will initially feed on their yolk sacs for the first few days. Once they begin free-swimming, start feeding them infusoria or commercial fry food specifically designed for small fry. As they grow, gradually introduce larger live or frozen foods, such as micro worms or daphnia, to support their growth. Perform regular water changes to maintain excellent water quality and promote healthy development. The fry will reach a size where they can be integrated into a community tank with other peaceful fish, once they are large enough not to be considered prey. Maintaining proper conditions and careful feeding will ensure the successful breeding and raising of black neon tetra fry in captivity.
