Blue dolphin cichlid Care Guide

Cyrtocara moorii

❤️ Care

The Blue Dolphin Cichlid is relatively easy to care for, provided its specific environmental needs are met. As a native of Lake Malawi, it thrives in alkaline water conditions. Ideal water parameters include a pH range of 7.5 to 8.5 and a temperature range of 24-28°C (75-82°F). To mimic its natural habitat, the aquarium should have plenty of open swimming space along with rocky structures and caves to provide hiding spots. Sandy substrates are preferred as this cichlid enjoys sifting through the sand in search of food.

A tank size of at least 200 liters (53 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Blue Dolphin Cichlids, as they can grow up to 20-25 cm (8-10 inches) in length. They are generally peaceful, especially for a cichlid, but can exhibit mild territorial behavior, especially during breeding. They do well in a community setting with other peaceful or semi-aggressive cichlids of similar size. Avoid keeping them with overly aggressive species that might stress or injure them.

In terms of diet, the Blue Dolphin Cichlid is omnivorous. It thrives on a varied diet that includes high-quality cichlid pellets, flakes, and occasional protein sources like brine shrimp and bloodworms. Incorporating some vegetable matter, such as spirulina or blanched vegetables, can help balance their diet and maintain their vibrant color. Overfeeding should be avoided to prevent water quality issues and obesity.
