❤️ Care

Caring for the Bumblebee Cichlid involves replicating its natural habitat within the aquarium. As an endemic species to Lake Malawi, it thrives in water conditions that are hard and alkaline, with a pH range of 7.8 to 8.6 and a temperature between 24-28°C (75-82°F). A tank of at least 200 liters (53 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and to establish territories, as these cichlids can be territorial, especially during breeding. The aquarium setup should include plenty of rocks, caves, and hiding spots, resembling the rocky environments found in Lake Malawi. This not only offers security but also reduces stress and aggression by allowing the fish to claim distinct territories.

In terms of diet, the Bumblebee Cichlid is an omnivore with a unique feeding behavior in the wild. In its natural habitat, it is known for its ability to feed on parasites found on larger fish, such as the Bagrus meridionalis catfish. In the aquarium, it can be fed a varied diet that includes high-quality flake foods, pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp. To maintain its vibrant coloration and health, it's essential to provide a balanced diet rich in both proteins and plant matter. Avoid overfeeding, as this can lead to poor water quality and health issues.
