Cave tetra Profile

The Cave tetra, also known as Astyanax mexicanus, is a unique fish species adapted to life in the dark environments of caves. Originating from Mexico, this fish exhibits a striking lack of pigmentation, resulting in a pale, almost translucent appearance. It has a streamlined body shape typical of tetra species but is distinguished by its reduced or absent eyes, an adaptation to its lightless habitat. While it holds scientific interest due to its adaptation to cave life, the Cave tetra is not commonly kept in the aquarium hobby, primarily due to its specialized habitat requirements and less colorful appearance compared to other tetras.
