Corydoras nain Breeding Guide

🐠 Breeding

Breeding Process

Corydoras nain, while resilient, is not commonly bred in home aquariums, making attempts to do so somewhat challenging. Breeding typically occurs when conditions mimic their natural habitat. To stimulate breeding, slightly lower the water temperature to around 22°C and gradually bring it back up to 24-26°C. This mimics seasonal changes and encourages spawning behavior. Select a group of healthy adults, ideally with more females than males. A minimum school of six is recommended, though a larger group can increase the likelihood of successful breeding. Prepare a separate breeding tank, ensuring it is densely planted to offer adequate cover. The breeding tank should have a pH between 6 and 8, with soft, slightly acidic water being preferred. Provide plenty of smooth, flat surfaces like large substrates or tank walls where eggs can be laid. Males will typically chase the females and encourage them to lay eggs.

Care of the Fry

Once the eggs are laid, remove the adults to prevent them from consuming the eggs. The eggs generally hatch within 3 to 5 days. At this point, water quality becomes a critical factor, so ensure the breeding tank is kept clean, with regular water changes when necessary. The newly hatched fry initially feed off their yolk sacs for the first few days. Once they become free-swimming, start feeding them infusoria, or commercially available fry foods designed for small, developing fish. As they grow, gradually introduce larger food items such as microworms, freshly hatched brine shrimp, or finely crushed flakes.

Additional Information

Consider using a sponge filter in the breeding tank to maintain good water quality while avoiding strong currents that could exhaust the fry. As Corydoras nain is primarily a bottom dweller, ensure feeding occurs at the lower levels of the tank. Maintain a peaceful environment free from aggressive or territorial behaviors to support optimal growth and development for the fry.
