Care Process

The Garnet Tetra is a social and resilient species, making it suitable for aquarists with moderate experience. These rare fish are uncommon in home aquariums but are affordable to maintain. They thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5. Keeping the water temperature between 23°C and 28°C is ideal for their well-being. The Garnet Tetra's social nature means they prefer to live in schools with a minimum of six fish. Maintaining a ratio of at least 5 liters per fish can create a comfortable environment. Regular tank cleaning and water quality checks are essential, as they fall under low maintenance care requirements.

Feeding

The Garnet Tetra has a varied diet. You can feed them a combination of flakes and pellets as daily staples. To add variety and enhance their colors, include options like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Occasionally, you may also provide micro worms, tubifex worms, and frozen shrimp. Vegetable matter and algae wafers can support their digestive health. Freeze-dried foods and color-enhancing food are good supplemental choices. Stick-on tablets and feeder fish may also be included in their diet.

Tank Setup

Garnet Tetras are adaptable to various tank habitats. They can be found dwelling at the surface, mid-section, or bottom of the tank. A planted aquarium with plenty of hiding spots and open swimming areas will cater to their dynamic nature. Although they exhibit mostly peaceful and mildly territorial behavior, monitoring tank mates is essential to avoid conflicts especially during breeding, when they might exhibit slightly more aggression.

Additional Information

The Garnet Tetra’s moderate hardiness means they can withstand some fluctuations in tank conditions, but consistent parameters should be maintained to ensure their health. Their uncommon popularity allows aquarists to boast a unique species in their collection. While their aggression level is mostly peaceful, be cautious during breeding times, as they may display slightly increased aggression. To promote breeding, provide a well-balanced diet and ample hiding places for the fish fry once they appear.
