The Giant Pikehead is a unique and rare addition to an aquarium, known for its distinct size and semi-aggressive nature. However, it requires specific conditions to thrive and should only be cared for by experienced aquarists.

Care and Tank Setup

The Giant Pikehead requires a tank environment that can accommodate its size, with a capacity of at least 100 liters per fish. It is advisable to house these fish in groups of at least six to promote natural schooling behavior. Since they are highly territorial, ensure the tank offers plenty of space and hiding spots to reduce tension.

Temperature should be maintained between 24°C to 28°C, and the pH level should remain within the range of 6.0 to 7.5. It's important to have a well-filtered tank with steady water flow and an ecosystem that reflects their native habitats. Being a surface, mid-tank, and bottom dweller, the tank should be set up with different zones and plenty of cover provided by plants or decorations.

Feeding

The Giant Pikehead is omnivorous and will enjoy a varied diet that includes both protein-rich and plant-based foods. Suitable food options include flakes, pellets, bloodworms, brine shrimp, tubifex worms, frozen shrimp, vegetable matter, algae wafers, color enhancing food, daphnia, micro worms, feeder fish, freeze-dried foods, and stick-on tablets. Providing a balanced diet will help maintain their health and vibrant coloration.

Behavior and Compatibility

While Giant Pikeheads have a semi-aggressive and highly territorial disposition, they can coexist with other semi-aggressive fish if careful consideration is given to tank mates. During breeding, their aggression increases moderately, so adequate space and monitoring are essential.

These fish are considered moderately hardy, making them manageable for aquarists who are prepared to meet their needs; however, they are difficult to care for due to their specific requirements and territorial behavior. Hence, the maintenance level is high, and they are considered a challenging species to keep.

Breeding

Breeding the Giant Pikehead in a home aquarium is rare and not fully understood. While they can become more aggressive when spawning, providing a spacious environment with multiple hiding areas can increase the chances of successful breeding. It is crucial to ensure that there is no overcrowding and that the water parameters are consistently optimal.
