The Glass Knifefish prefers a calm, heavily planted environment that mimics its natural habitat in deeper, slower-moving waters. In the wild, this species is commonly found in deep waters during the rainy season, when the rivers swell, providing them with the cover and resources they need.
- Tank Size: Minimum 200 liters (52 gallons) for a single adult. A larger tank is recommended to allow free movement.
- Water Parameters: Soft, slightly acidic to neutral water with a pH range of 6.0-7.5. A temperature range of 24-28°C (75-82°F) is ideal.
- Substrate: A soft substrate rich in plant debris mimics the natural environment, helping reduce stress.
- Aquatic Plants: Provide plenty of cover with plants and driftwood. This species prefers shaded areas where it can hide.
- Diet: The Glass Knifefish feeds on a variety of live foods, such as mosquito larvae, bloodworms, and small invertebrates. Offering a varied diet can keep them healthy and vibrant.
They are relatively peaceful but may eat small fish that can fit into their mouths. It’s best to house them with similarly sized tankmates or in a species-only tank. They also produce weak electrical signals through their electric organ discharge (EOD) to navigate and communicate, so avoid housing them with other fish that rely on electrical impulses, as this may cause stress or interference.
