Breeding Setup

Glowlight tetras are a popular choice among aquarists and can be bred in captivity with the right conditions. It is essential to set up a separate breeding tank for successful spawning. The breeding tank should have a capacity of at least 20 liters and should be furnished with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops to provide a surface for the eggs. The water temperature should be maintained between 24–28°C, with a pH level ranging from 6.5 to 7.5. Dim lighting is preferred to mimic their natural environment.

Breeding Process

Begin by selecting a breeding pair or a small group consisting of two males and two females. Condition them with high-quality live foods such as bloodworms or brine shrimp to encourage spawning readiness. When the female becomes noticeably round with eggs, introduce the pair or group to the breeding tank. Glowlight tetras typically spawn early in the morning. Males will display vibrant colors to entice females to spawn among the plants or spawning mops. It's crucial to remove the adults after spawning, as they may consume the eggs.

Caring for the Fry

The eggs will hatch within 24 to 36 hours, and the fry will become free-swimming after about 3 to 4 days. At this stage, it is vital to provide them with suitable food. Start feeding the fry with infusoria or commercially available liquid fry food, slowly transitioning to larger foods such as freshly hatched brine shrimp or microworms as they grow. Maintain a consistent water temperature and quality, performing regular water changes to ensure a healthy environment for the growing fry.

Additional Considerations

Glowlight tetras exhibit peaceful and social behavior, with no increase in aggression during the breeding period. They are mild in their territorial behavior, making them ideal for community tanks once they are past the fry stage. Keep in mind that breeding glowlight tetras may require some patience, as they might not spawn immediately upon the initial setup. Providing optimal conditions and high-quality nutrition will significantly enhance your chances of successful breeding.
