Tank Setup

To create a suitable environment for the Green neon tetra, start with a tank of at least 120 liters to comfortably accommodate a small school of these active fish. The tank should mimic their natural habitat, featuring soft, slightly acidic to neutral water. Use dark substrate to bring out the vibrant colors of the fish, and include plenty of live plants such as Java moss or Anubias to provide hiding spaces.

Lighting should be subdued to mimic the shaded waters they are accustomed to. You can also add driftwood and leaves to provide additional cover and contribute to the natural feel. Ensure a good filtration system without creating too much current as these fish thrive in gentle water flow.

Water Conditions

Maintain water temperature between 22°C and 28°C and a pH level from 5 to 7. Regular water changes are crucial, replacing about 25% of the tank water each week to keep nitrate levels low and maintain water clarity and cleanliness.

Feeding

Green neon tetras are omnivores and thrive on a varied diet. Feed them high-quality flake food, pellets, and live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. It's important to ensure the food is small enough for them to consume. Feeding them two to three times a day in small amounts that they can eat in a few minutes is ideal. Overfeeding can lead to water quality issues, so it's essential to monitor their feeding and adjust as necessary.

Social Behavior and Compatibility

Green neon tetras are peaceful and social creatures that do best in groups of at least six, as this helps them feel secure and minimizes stress. They can coexist beautifully with other peaceful, small fish species. Avoid putting them with larger, aggressive fish which may bully or prey on them. Their peaceful nature makes them excellent inhabitants of a community tank, bringing both activity and color.

Health and Maintenance

Regular tank maintenance, balanced feeding, and monitoring for signs of stress or disease are integral to keeping your Green neon tetras healthy. Look out for signs like loss of appetite, discolored scales, or abnormal swimming patterns. Early detection and treatment of health issues can prevent them from escalating and affecting the entire tank.

In summary, maintaining appropriate water quality, ensuring a balanced diet, and keeping them in a suitable social environment will allow your green neon tetras to thrive. Regular observation and maintenance will help catch any potential problems early, ensuring your fish lead a healthy, active life.
