Breeding Process
The Keyhole Cichlid is moderately bred by hobbyists and can be successfully bred in a home aquarium if the right conditions are provided. To encourage breeding, it is advised to set up a separate breeding tank or ensure that the main tank is optimally arranged. The ideal breeding conditions include maintaining the water temperature between 26-28°C with a pH level of around 6.5 to 7.0. It's crucial to replicate their natural habitat with plenty of hiding spots and flat surfaces, as Keyhole Cichlids are substrate spawners. To trigger spawning, gradually increase the temperature and simulate the rainy season by conducting frequent water changes with slightly cooler water.Spawning and Egg Care
Once ready to spawn, the pair will select a flat surface, often a rock or a broad leaf, on which the female will lay her eggs. The female may lay around 300 eggs, which are then fertilized by the male. Both parents will take turns guarding and aerating the eggs by fanning them with their fins. Eggs generally hatch in about 3 to 5 days.Care of the Fry
Once the eggs hatch, the parents will continue to protect the fry. At this stage, the fry remain in pits that the parents create in the substrate. After another 5 to 6 days, the fry become free-swimming. It's important to feed the fry with infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp at this stage. Gradually introduce crushed flakes as they grow.General Considerations
Keyhole Cichlids are known to be slightly more aggressive during breeding, so it is advisable to monitor their behavior closely if they are kept in a community tank. To ensure the safety of both the fry and other tank inhabitants, it may be necessary to relocate either the fry or the other fish temporarily. Regular maintenance of water conditions and removing any leftover food can prevent the growth of harmful bacteria, ensuring the health of both the parents and the developing fry.📊 Datasheet
