🐠 Breeding
Breeding Process
The Masked Julie, known for its vibrant coloration and social nature, is a challenging species to breed in captivity, which makes breeding attempts rather sporadic among hobbyists. They are known to be substrate spawners, often laying eggs in hidden crevices or underneath flat surfaces. To stimulate breeding, it is essential to replicate their natural habitat conditions, including water parameters such as a pH between 6.5 and 7.8 and temperatures between 24°C and 28°C. A breeding pair should be isolated in a well-decorated tank containing plenty of hiding spots to reduce stress and provide suitable spawning sites. Although the Masked Julie is mostly peaceful, breeding aggression can rise significantly during this period. It is recommended to keep tank mates to a minimum to avoid unnecessary territorial disputes and to maintain a calm environment.Care of the Fry
Once the eggs are fertilized, parents might show some level of aggression to protect their territory, so it's crucial to monitor their behavior closely. The eggs usually hatch within a few days, and it’s ideal to remove adult fish to prevent them from consuming the fry. However, if the adult pair shows protective behavior, they can remain as they may safeguard the fry. The fry should be fed with high-quality, small-sized food to enhance growth and survival. Suitable food includes micro worms and finely crushed flakes. Ensure that the tank environment remains clean and stable, as fry are particularly sensitive to water changes. Regularly check water conditions to provide optimal health and promote proper development.Additional Information
Breeding Masked Julie in captivity is moderately complex and requires patience and attention to detail. While their popularity among aquarists is fairly high due to their vibrant coloration, they remain uncommon as a captive-bred species owing to the complexities in breeding them successfully.📊 Datasheet
