General Description

Mollies are vibrant, moderately hardy, and very affordable aquarium fish originating from Central America. They're mostly peaceful and can add a touch of vibrancy to any aquarium setup. Despite their generally calm demeanor, mollies can become slightly finicky with tank mates.

Tank Setup

For each molly, it's recommended to provide at least 4 liters of water. They thrive in tanks that simulate their natural habitat, which often includes moderately planted environments with some open swimming spaces. Ensure consistent water parameters to maintain their moderate hardiness level. As mollies are moderately territorial, ensure ample space to reduce stress and potential conflicts.

Water Conditions

Maintain a pH level between 7.5 and 8.5, with a water temperature ranging between 24°C and 28°C (75°F to 82°F). Regular water changes and quality checks will aid in maintaining their overall health.

Compatibility

Mollies are mostly peaceful fish, but their compatibility with tankmates should be carefully considered to avoid stress or aggressive behaviors. They can become slightly more aggressive during breeding, so monitor their behavior closely in mixed-species tanks.

Feeding

A varied diet is best for mollies to ensure vibrant colors and healthy development. Provide them with a mix of high-quality flake foods, freeze-dried brine shrimp, and blanched vegetables. Feeding small amounts multiple times a day is more beneficial than a single large feeding.

Maintenance

Mollies require a low maintenance level compared to other species, making them suitable for beginner to intermediate aquarists. Even with their low maintenance requirements, ensure regular cleaning and monitoring of the tank environment.

Breeding

Mollies are livebearers and can breed relatively easily in captivity. They exhibit slightly more aggressive behavior during breeding, so it's advisable to keep a close watch on their interaction and, if possible, separate pregnant females to a separate breeding tank to reduce stress and increase the survival rate of fry.
