Overview

The Odessa Barb is a moderately hard fish to care for, but its stunning appearance and social nature make it a rewarding addition to a community tank. These fish are of moderate popularity and are considered uncommon. They are known for their vibrant coloring and active swimming patterns, making them a visual highlight in any tank setup.

Tank Setup

Odessa Barbs thrive in an aquarium with a water pH between 6.0 to 7.5. The ideal water temperature ranges from 23 to 28°C. They should be housed in a tank that offers 15 liters of water per fish. These fish can grow up to 8 cm in length and prefer a tank environment that allows them to swim freely across different levels, as they inhabit surface, mid, and bottom levels of the tank. Additionally, the tank should have plenty of plants and hiding spots to mimic their natural habitat and reduce stress.

Social Behavior

Odessa Barbs are social and should be kept in schools of at least 6 individuals to ensure their wellbeing and to showcase their natural swimming patterns. They exhibit a mostly peaceful aggression level and are moderately territorial but are generally suitable for community tanks with other peaceful species.

Feeding

These fish have an omnivorous diet, so providing a varied diet is key to maintaining their health and enhancing their colors. Their diet can include flakes, pellets, algae wafers, and vegetable matter to provide essential nutrients. Additionally, they can be fed live or frozen options such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, tubifex worms, daphnia, micro worms, and frozen shrimp. Introduce color-enhancing foods and freeze-dried options for variation. Consider offering feeder fish and stick-on tablets to satisfy their diverse dietary needs.

Breeding

Odessa Barbs are egg scatterers and slightly more aggressive during breeding periods. It is recommended to create a separate breeding tank with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops for the eggs to adhere to. Monitor the adult fish closely, as they may eat their eggs if not separated promptly.

Maintenance and Health

These fish have a low maintenance level and should be housed in an environment with effective filtration to keep water parameters stable and to manage waste. Regular water changes are necessary to maintain water quality. Monitor for common diseases and issues like ich or fin rot, and act promptly if any symptoms are observed.
