Centromochlus perugiae

❤️ Care

The Honeycomb or Oil Catfish (Centromochlus perugiae) is a peaceful, nocturnal species with a distinctive honeycomb pattern and upside-down swimming behaviour. Native to the soft, tannin-rich waters of the Amazon Basin, it prefers a dimly lit, well-structured aquarium with driftwood, caves, and leaf litter that mimic its natural environment. Though shy by day, it becomes more active at night—especially when kept in small groups of three or more, which helps reduce stress and encourages natural behaviour. This species thrives on a protein-rich diet that includes sinking foods such as bloodworms, blackworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, and quality catfish wafers. While omnivorous, it shows a strong preference for meaty foods, especially when offered after lights out. The Honeycomb Catfish does best with other peaceful, calm tank mates like small tetras, pencilfish, hatchetfish, Corydoras, or dwarf cichlids, and should not be housed with aggressive or overly active species that may outcompete it for food. With the right setup, this subtle but fascinating fish becomes a rewarding addition to any softwater community aquarium.
