Panaque Care Guide

Tank Setup

When setting up a tank for Panaque, it's important to provide ample space as they require at least 100 liters per fish. Ensure the tank has good filtration and aeration, as Panaques can produce a lot of waste. The pH level of the water should be maintained between 6.5 and 8, and the temperature should be kept between 25°C and 30°C. Panaques are known to be territorial, especially when establishing their space; thus, providing multiple hiding spots with rocks, driftwood, or caves is beneficial. They are surface, mid-tank, and bottom dwellers, so a well-structured tank accommodating these different levels will suit their natural behavior.

Feeding

Panaques are not picky eaters but require a balanced diet. They are omnivorous with an affinity for vegetable matter and algae. Their diet should include a mixture of flakes, pellets, and algae wafers supplemented with live or frozen treats like bloodworms, brine shrimp, tubifex worms, frozen shrimp, and feeder fish. It's beneficial to provide vegetable matter like zucchini or cucumber. Occasionally offer color-enhancing food and stick-on tablets for variety. Freeze-dried foods, daphnia, and micro worms can also be introduced to encourage feeding activity and provide nutritional diversity.

Social Behavior

Panaques are generally social but can display territorial and slightly aggressive behavior, particularly during breeding. While they are very peaceful, they might become slightly more aggressive while breeding. It is recommended to keep them in schools of at least three to promote natural schooling behavior and reduce stress. They can be shy and playful, often hiding among tank structures or playing in the water currents. While they may exhibit social behavior, care should be taken while introducing other species to the tank, considering their territorial nature.

Maintenance Level

Maintaining a tank with Panaques requires regular upkeep. They are considered high maintenance due to their waste production and specific environmental needs. Regular water changes and thorough cleaning are essential to maintain optimal water quality. Monitor water parameters closely to ensure stability within their required range.

Affordability and Availability

Panaques are rare in the aquatic trade, which can make them somewhat expensive and uncommon in popularity. Investing in their care requires a commitment in both resources and attention to detail given their specific needs.
