General Information
The Panda Barb is a popular freshwater fish known for its distinctive black and white pattern that resembles a panda. It is common among aquarium enthusiasts due to its moderate care level and affordability. The Panda Barb is moderately hardy, making it suitable for both intermediate and experienced aquarists.
Tank Setup
Panda Barbs thrive in aquariums with a capacity that provides at least 20 liters per fish. A school of at least 6 fish helps them feel secure and display their natural behaviors. These fish are versatile dwellers, occupying surface, mid, and bottom layers of the tank. Therefore, an aquarium with varied decorations such as rocks, plants, and driftwood is ideal to create multiple levels for exploration.
The optimal water pH level ranges between 6.5 and 8.5, and the water temperature should be maintained between 25°C to 30°C to mimic their natural habitat. A moderate maintenance level is sufficient; regular water changes and monitoring of water parameters are recommended.
Feeding
Panda Barbs are omnivorous and enjoy a diverse diet. They should be fed a mix of high-quality flakes and pellets as staple foods. Supplementing their diet with live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, tubifex worms, daphnia, and micro worms is beneficial for their health. Vegetables, color enhancing food, algae wafers, and freeze-dried foods can add nutritional variety. Stick-on tablets and occasionally feeder fish can also be included in their diet.
Behaviour and Compatibility
Panda Barbs are semi-aggressive and exhibit mild territorial behavior, which might slightly increase during breeding periods. They generally coexist peacefully with other semi-aggressive or peaceful species that can withstand similar water conditions. It's important to provide ample space and hiding spots to minimize territorial disputes.
Monitoring behavior regularly will ensure a harmonious community tank environment. When planning tank mates, ensure to choose species that occupy different areas of the tank to reduce conflict and promote diversity.
Breeding
The breeding process of Panda Barbs involves slight changes in behavior, with males typically becoming a bit more aggressive. To encourage successful breeding, provide the fish with a separate breeding tank equipped with fine-leaved plants where the female can lay eggs. After spawning, carefully remove the adult fish to prevent them from eating the eggs. Ensure the breeding tank's water conditions are stable, and once the fry are free-swimming, begin feeding them with infusoria or liquid fry food until they are large enough to consume larger food.
