❤️ Care
The Pygmy Corydoras (Corydoras pygmaeus) is a delightful and relatively small freshwater fish known for its peaceful nature and social behavior. Originating from South America, these charming fish are well-loved by aquarists for their active schooling behavior and low maintenance requirements.
Care Process
The Pygmy Corydoras is a moderately hardy species that requires minimal maintenance, making them suitable for both beginner and experienced aquarists. They are peaceful and social creatures that thrive best in groups of at least six, as they enjoy the company of their own kind. A harmonious community tank with similar sized and non-aggressive tankmates is ideal.
They prefer clean, well-oxygenated water with a stable temperature range between 23-26°C (73-79°F). It is important to maintain a pH level between 6.0 and 7.5 to keep the water conditions optimal. Regular water changes and monitoring for water quality will ensure their well-being.
Feeding
Pygmy Corydoras are omnivorous bottom dwellers that enjoy a varied diet. An ideal diet includes high-quality flakes or pellets, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, tubifex worms, daphnia, and micro worms. Additionally, providing algae wafers can benefit their nutritional intake. For optimum health and vibrant colors, you may also consider offering color enhancing foods.
Tank Setup
The recommended tank size for a school of Pygmy Corydoras is no less than 20 liters (5 gallons). Each fish requires around 2 liters of space. A soft, sandy substrate is preferred as it closely mimics their natural habitat and protects their sensitive barbels. Incorporate plenty of hiding spots using plants, driftwood, and rocks to create a comfortable and stress-free environment.
Since they are bottom dwellers, the structure of the tank should provide ample floor space with gentle water flow to prevent disturbing the substrate. Maintain subdued lighting to imitate their shaded natural habitat, which will also encourage natural foraging behavior.
Breeding
Breeding Pygmy Corydoras in an aquarium is quite straightforward. They exhibit no change in aggression during the breeding period, which is useful in maintaining tank harmony. To encourage breeding, slightly raise the water temperature to mimic the rainy season and perform frequent water changes. Provide ample hiding places where the eggs can be laid, and ensure that the water is kept clean to promote healthy fry development.
