Care Process

The Red Tail Barracuda is a moderate-maintenance species requiring specific conditions for optimal health. Maintaining a stable environment with consistent water parameters is crucial for their well-being.

Temperature should be maintained between 24°C and 28°C. The water pH level should be kept within the range of 6.5 to 7.8. Regular water changes are necessary to keep the water clean and free from harmful chemicals.

Tank Setup

Red Tail Barracudas are large fish, ranging from 45 cm to 71 cm in length, requiring ample swimming space. An aquarium of at least 500 liters is recommended, given that the minimum recommended volume is 100 liters per fish. These fish are surface, mid-tank, and bottom dwellers, so it’s important to provide an environment that caters to all these levels.

The tank should be equipped with a secure lid, as barracudas can be skilful jumpers. Utilize decorations that offer hiding spots, but keep the tank open enough to allow free movement.

Feeding

The Red Tail Barracuda has an aggressive appetite and is known to consume a variety of food types. Offer a balanced diet that includes flakes, pellets, bloodworms, brine shrimp, tubifex worms, frozen shrimp, and vegetable matter. Incorporate algae wafers, color-enhancing food, daphnia, micro worms, feeder fish, and freeze-dried foods for variety and nutritional balance.

Feeding should be done twice daily. Ensure that the amount provided is consumed within a few minutes to prevent overfeeding and water deterioration.

Behavior and Compatibility

The Red Tail Barracuda has a complex personality, displaying social, aggressive, shy, playful, and semi-aggressive behaviors. They are known to be aggressive, especially towards smaller fish, so careful thought should be given to tank mates. They also exhibit moderately territorial behavior, which should be considered when setting up the tank and choosing companions.

Breeding

The Red Tail Barracuda generally does not exhibit any change in behavior during breeding. However, given their complex nature, providing an environment conducive to breeding can be challenging and may not be practical for novice aquarists.

Additional Considerations

Due to their aggressive nature and specific care requirements, Red Tail Barracudas are considered difficult to care for and best suited for experienced aquarists. Ensure regular maintenance, monitoring water conditions closely, and maintain adequate tank filter systems to handle the bio-load.
