🐠 Breeding
Breeding Process
Breeding Severums in captivity can be moderately challenging due to specific requirements for water parameters and space. Severums prefer slightly acidic to neutral water with a pH range of 6 to 7.5 and a temperature range between 24°C and 28°C. Optimum breeding conditions require setting up a separate breeding tank to avoid aggression from other tankmates. Severums are highly territorial during breeding, so providing ample space and hiding spots is essential to keep stress levels low. The breeding tank should have flat surfaces such as rocks or broad leaves where Severums can lay their eggs. To trigger spawning, gradually raise the water temperature and perform regular water changes to simulate their natural environment. It is important to condition the breeding pair with a variety of live, frozen, and color-enhancing foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and vegetable matter.Care of the Fry
Once the eggs are laid, both parents will protect the eggs diligently. Severum parents may become highly aggressive during this stage, making it crucial to maintain a quiet and undisturbed environment. The eggs typically hatch within three to five days, depending on water temperature. After hatching, the fry will remain attached to surfaces for a few days while absorbing the yolk sac for nourishment. Once they are free-swimming, you can start feeding them with suitable fry food such as infusoria or commercially available liquid fry food. Gradually introduce micro worms and other small live food as they grow.Additional Information
Maintaining a pristine water environment is critical for the health and growth of Severum fry. Ensure proper filtration and regular water changes to maintain optimal water quality. Since Severums are social fish, they need a large tank due to their size and space requirements. As they mature, providing ample room and having plants or decorations for hiding is crucial to prevent stress, especially in a species known to be moderately territorial and aggressive during breeding.📊 Datasheet
