General Care

The Spotted Scat, also known as Scatophagus argus, is an attractive addition to any aquarium. They are best kept in a group, with a minimum school size of four fish to promote natural social behaviors. As moderate hardiness fish, they require some attention to their water conditions but are generally resilient once their specific needs are met.

Water Conditions

To maintain a healthy environment for your Spotted Scat, ensure the water temperature is kept between 22°C and 28°C. The pH level should be maintained within a range of 5.5 to 7.5. Regular monitoring and water changes are crucial to maintain optimal conditions and prevent illness.

Tank Setup

Spotted Scats are social fish that thrive in a tank offering plenty of space and a varied habitat. A tank designed to house surface, mid-tank, and bottom dwellers will accommodate their swimming preferences. Considering their minimum and maximum length ranges between 15cm to 20cm, it is important to have a spacious tank. An ideal setup would be 15 liters of water per fish. Enhance their environment with plants and hiding spots, but keep enough space for swimming.

Diet and Feeding

The Spotted Scat is an omnivorous creature with a varied diet. They will eagerly accept a range of foods including flakes, pellets, bloodworms, brine shrimp, tubifex worms, frozen shrimp, and vegetable matter. Supplement their diet with algae wafers and color-enhancing food to maintain their vibrancy and health. Regular feedings of stick-on tablets, daphnia, micro worms, feeder fish, and freeze-dried foods will also ensure a balanced diet.

Behavior and Compatibility

These fish are highly social and are often best kept with other species that share their peaceful and active nature. Avoid housing them with smaller fish that they may view as food. Their moderate popularity and intriguing patterns make them a delightful addition to community tanks.
