The Warmouth, like other sunfish species, is known for its hardy nature but can be aggressive toward smaller or similarly sized tankmates. To keep this species successfully in an aquarium, it’s important to replicate its natural environment and provide adequate space.
- Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 200 liters (52 gallons) is recommended due to the Warmouth’s active behavior and larger size, which can reach up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length. This gives it plenty of space to swim and establish territory.
- Water Parameters: The Warmouth is adaptable to a wide range of water conditions but prefers water temperatures between 20-28°C (68-82°F). It thrives in slow-moving water with a pH range of 6.5 to 8.0, mimicking its natural habitat of ponds, lakes, and slow rivers. Good filtration and regular water changes are essential to maintain water quality, as Warmouths produce a significant amount of waste.
- Aquarium Setup: To create a suitable environment, provide plenty of hiding spots with rocks, driftwood, and plants. The Warmouth prefers a habitat with structure, which helps it feel secure and reduces stress. As they can be territorial, having spaces where they can retreat and establish their own zones within the tank is important.
- Diet: Warmouths are carnivorous and have a large appetite, thanks to their large mouth. They enjoy a varied diet that includes live or frozen foods such as minnows, worms, shrimp, and crickets. They can also be fed high-quality pellets designed for carnivorous fish. Due to their aggressive nature, they may attempt to eat smaller fish, so it’s essential to select tankmates carefully or house them alone.
