❤️ Care

Scientific Name: Pristella maxillaris
Size: 2 - 3 cm
Conservation Status: Least Concern

Tank Setup

The X-ray tetra thrives in aquariums with stable water conditions. They require a minimum of 2 liters of water per fish, making them suitable for small communities in larger tanks. Aim for a tank that maintains a water temperature between 24°C and 28°C, and a pH level of 6 to 7.5. These tetras are surface, mid-tank, and bottom dwellers, so a well-planted tank with plenty of swimming space is ideal. Use dim lighting to mimic their natural habitat, and incorporate hiding places with plants or decorations.

Tank Mates and Behavior

X-ray tetras are social and should be kept in schools of at least 6 to provide a sense of security and encourage natural behavior. They display mostly peaceful behavior with mild territorial tendencies, making them suitable for community tanks with other non-aggressive species.

Feeding

X-ray tetras are omnivores and benefit from a varied diet to maintain their health and vibrant colors. They readily accept flakes, pellets, and can also be fed with bloodworms, brine shrimp, tubifex worms, and daphnia. Frozen shrimp or vegetable matter can be part of their diet as treats. Include algae wafers or color-enhancing food to cater to specific dietary needs. Stick-on tablets and freeze-dried foods are also suitable options for these active swimmers.

Maintenance and Health

These tetras are considered to have moderate hardiness and require low maintenance. Regular water changes and monitoring of water parameters are essential to prevent stress and disease. Maintaining cleanliness and proper filtration will contribute to a healthy environment.

Breeding Setup

Setting up a separate breeding tank is necessary due to significant differences in aggression and environmental needs during spawning. Dim lighting, dense plants, and spawning mops should be included. Keep the water temperature between 24°C and 28°C, with a pH of 6 to 7.5 to create optimal conditions for breeding. Condition breeding pairs with high-quality live foods to increase breeding success.

Handling Fry

After spawning, remove adult fish promptly to protect the eggs. The eggs hatch in 24 to 36 hours. Initially, fry feed on their yolk sac but will transition to infusoria or liquid fry food. As they grow, introduce micro worms or powdered fry food. Keep water conditions stable with gentle water changes. Isolate fry until they are 1 to 1.5 cm long before introducing them to the main tank. Proper care and experience will result in a successful breeding experience.

With their popularity and affordability, X-ray tetras are a favorite among aquarium enthusiasts. Their glistening appearance and active nature bring life to any aquarium setup.
