Care Process

The Zebra oto, also known as the Zebra Dwarf Sucker, is a social and peaceful fish that thrives in a well-maintained aquarium. They prefer to be kept in a group, with a minimum school size of six individuals. This ensures they exhibit natural behaviors and reduces stress. With a moderate level of hardiness, they require attention to tank conditions and routines to ensure their wellbeing. Regular water changes and maintaining a stable environment are crucial as they are mildly territorial and prefer clean, high-quality water.

Tank Setup

For Zebra otos, it's important to replicate their natural habitat as closely as possible. They favor mid-tank and bottom-dwelling zones in the aquarium. A planted tank with plenty of hiding spots such as driftwood and rocks will provide them with security and comfort. Aquarium water should be kept at a pH level between 6.5 and 7.5, and the temperature should range from 24°C to 28°C. For optimal conditions, allocate at least 20 liters of water per fish. Given their social nature, ensure the tank size can accommodate the minimum group size of six fish comfortably.

Feeding

Zebra otos have an omnivorous diet and will consume a variety of food sources. Their diet should include flakes, pellets, algae wafers, and vegetable matter for their primary nutrition. To add variety and ensure nutritional balance, incorporate live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, tubifex worms, and daphnia. They can also benefit from occasional treats like micro worms, feeder fish, and color enhancing foods. To ensure they receive adequate nourishment, include freeze-dried foods and stick-on tablets in their diet as well.

Additional Information

Zebra otos have a low maintenance level, making them suitable for aquarists with a moderate level of experience. Their peaceful demeanor and mild territorial behavior make them an excellent addition to community tanks, as they coexist well with other non-aggressive species. The species has an affordability rating of moderate and is categorized under the conservation status of "Least Concern."
