Tank Setup
The Clown Killifish, also known as Chromaphyosemion bitaeniatum, thrives best in a tank that mimics their natural habitat. Aim for a tank habitat that can accommodate surface, mid-tank, and bottom dwelling. To ensure a healthy living environment, maintain the water temperature between 20°C to 28°C. The water pH level should be kept between 6 to 7.5. Given their maximum length ranging from 2 to 6 cm, a minimum of 10 liters of water per fish is recommended. Clown Killifish are social and should be kept in schools with a minimum size of five to promote natural behaviors and reduce stress.
Feeding
Clown Killifish are omnivorous and have a diverse diet. Feed them a balanced mix of flakes, pellets, and some live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, tubifex worms, frozen shrimp, and daphnia. It's also beneficial to include some vegetable matter or algae wafers, which can supplement their diet and help maintain their health. Occasionally, offer color-enhancing food for vibrant and healthy fin colors. Freeze-dried foods and micro worms are also suitable, and stick-on tablets can be used for nutritional enrichment.
Behavior and Tank Mates
Clown Killifish are generally very peaceful, although they may show semi-aggressive behaviors in some cases. They exhibit moderately territorial behaviors but are not highly aggressive. During breeding, there might be a slight increase in aggression, so provide ample space and hiding spots for them to retreat to. This species is popular due to its moderate care difficulty and attractive appearance. When choosing tank mates, consider other small, peaceful species to prevent stress or aggressive interactions.
General Care
Clown Killifish require moderate maintenance and care. They fall under the category with moderate hardiness, making them suitable for aquarists with some experience. This species is moderately affordable, allowing hobbyists to acquire them without significant financial burden. Regular water changes and tank maintenance are necessary to keep the aquatic environment clean and healthy. Monitor water parameters consistently to avoid stressing the fish and ensure that they remain in optimal health.
