🐠 Breeding
Breeding Setup:
- Mature males develop enhanced coloration and become more territorial during the breeding season, particularly in the warmer months. To encourage spawning, keep the water temperature at the higher end of their preferred range and ensure there are plenty of hiding spaces where the females can retreat.
- Empire Gudgeons are substrate spawners, laying their eggs on rocks, wood, or the tank bottom. A smooth surface should be provided for egg deposition.
Reproductive Behavior:
Males will establish small territories and display bright colors to attract females. Courtship often involves displaying in front of the female and zig-zagging around the spawning site. After fertilization, the male guards the eggs until they hatch.
Fry Care:
The eggs usually hatch within a few days, and the fry can be fed on infusoria or finely crushed flakes until they are large enough to accept live foods such as baby brine shrimp. It’s important to separate the fry from adult fish to prevent predation.
