❤️ Care

Tank Setup:

  • The Empire Gudgeon thrives in both freshwater habitats and slightly brackish estuaries, reflecting its wide adaptability. They prefer a tank that mimics their natural environment with soft substrate, hiding spots like driftwood, and aquatic plants for shelter. A minimum tank size of 40-60 liters (10-15 gallons) is suitable for a small group of these fish.
  • Though primarily freshwater fish, they can tolerate some salinity, making them adaptable to tanks with slight brackish conditions if desired.

Water Conditions:

Empire Gudgeons prefer temperatures ranging from 22°C to 28°C (72°F to 82°F), ideal for warmer months, with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5. They need clean, well-filtered water with regular partial water changes to maintain water quality.

Feeding:

In their natural environment, Empire Gudgeons feed on small invertebrates and mosquito larvae. In captivity, they thrive on a varied diet that includes frozen foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp, along with live options like mosquito larvae. High-quality flakes and pellets can also be used, but a diet rich in protein ensures their colors remain vibrant, especially for mature males.

Tank Mates:

Due to their peaceful nature, Empire Gudgeons are excellent tank mates for other small, non-aggressive fish. They can be housed with species such as tetras, rasboras, and corydoras in a community setup.
