Care Process

The Reedfish, also known as Ropefish, is a hardy and resilient aquatic entity, making it suitable for aquarium enthusiasts with moderate experience. It's an uncommon species with a moderate level of popularity in the hobby. Ensuring their well-being requires maintaining an optimal tank environment and water conditions.

Tank Setup

Reedfish thrive in tanks with a minimum capacity of 50 liters per fish. They prefer a mixed habitat that allows them to dwell at the surface, middle, and bottom of the tank. They can grow to lengths of 40 cm, so a spacious environment is essential. The water temperature should be maintained between 20°C and 28°C. The pH levels need to be neutral to slightly alkaline, ranging from 7 to 8.5.

It's crucial to secure the tank with a tight-fitting lid as Reedfish may attempt to escape. Additionally, simulate their natural environment with lots of plants and hiding spots, using materials like driftwood and rock caves.

Feeding

Reedfish have a diverse diet, thriving on a variety of foods. Offer them a mix of flakes, pellets, and freeze-dried foods as staples. Supplement their diet with live or frozen proteins such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, Daphnia, tubifex worms, and feeder fish. They also enjoy vegetable matter and algae wafers, which can help replicate the variety found in their natural diet.

To enhance their coloration, offer color enhancing foods, and use stick-on tablets to ensure they receive all necessary nutrients.

Behavior and Compatibility

Reedfish have a social, playful nature, exhibiting very peaceful behavior with minimal aggression, even during breeding periods. They can be kept with other fish of similar size and temperament. Although they are mildly territorial, providing ample space and hiding spots can help minimize this behavior.

A minimum school size of six Reedfish is recommended to help them feel secure and reduce any potential stress in a community tank setting.

Maintenance

Reedfish require moderate maintenance. Regular water changes are essential to keep the tank clean and parameters stable. Monitor water conditions regularly to adjust temperature and pH as needed. Investing in a quality filtration system will support a healthy environment for your Reedfish.
