West African lungfish Profile

The West African lungfish is a species of lungfish endemic to West Africa. It possesses an elongated, eel-like body, primarily grayish-brown in color. This lungfish is distinguished by its capability to breathe air due to a pair of lungs, allowing it to survive in oxygen-poor water conditions. Notably, it spends periods of drought encased in a cocoon of mud, demonstrating remarkable adaptability. While fascinating from a biological standpoint, the West African lungfish is not particularly well-known or widespread in the aquarium hobby, mainly due to its specialized care requirements and large size.
