West African lungfish Care Guide

The West African Lungfish is an intriguing and exotic freshwater fish that requires a specific set-up and care routine due to its unique characteristics. This species can grow anywhere between 40cm to 130cm in length, making them a substantial presence in any aquarium.

Tank Setup

Due to their potential size, a spacious tank is essential. A minimum tank size of 400 liters is recommended to ensure ample space for movement. The water temperature should be maintained within the range of 18°C to 29°C, and the pH level should be kept between 6 and 8 to replicate their natural environment. Since Lungfish can be moderately aggressive and territorial, provide hiding spots using rocks or wood and ensure that the tankmates are compatible and can withstand their behavior.

Care Process

West African Lungfish require moderate maintenance. Their level of hardiness is moderate, meaning they are not overly fragile but require careful monitoring to ensure a stable environment. Regular water changes, at least biweekly, are essential to maintain water quality. Keep an eye out for aggression, especially during the breeding season when their aggression may increase slightly.

Feeding

Lungfish are carnivorous and primarily consume a diet of meaty foods. They thrive on a diverse diet that includes fish, earthworms, crayfish, and pellets designed for carnivorous fish. Feed them several times a week, keeping in mind not to overfeed to avoid water quality issues.
